Plugging along with week two of the Daily 3D project with a bit more success after trying to simplify my ideas. Went a bit more into simply fun cartoonish characters then abstracts. Was a lot of fun to model out and render this guy. Based off of a sketch by billiambabble that I really liked on instagram.
Daily 3d Project
I started to do a Daily 3D project about a week ago and it has been a really intersting excercise so far. I am attemping to post one 3D project a day to my instagram account but I don't always get something worth posting. Which is a nice way of saying that I have gone down some real ugly rabbit holes of bad ideas and misplaced direction, lol! It has beat into my skull that once again that simpler is almost always better. Get an idea and see how far you can strip it down just to get something decent looking. Ton of fun though and learning all sorts of things doing it. Highly recommend it or something similar if you are in the arts.
New Work in the Wild: ESPN Action
Aaron Hewitt reached out and asked if I could help build up a action shot for ESPN which just went live. Had to do a lot of work on that BG to get it where the AD wanted it. All CGI trees.
New Work in the Wild: Nike Instagram
Did a couple rush background swaps and tonings last week that went live already it seems. Weee!
Before on the left and the afters on the right of course.
Some nice music for your work day

Cymbal & Gong Study
Just picked up this new Cymbal & Gong 22" crash ride, "Holy Grail" from Revival Drums and it sounds so damn good I wanted to do something visual with it. They do a custom patina which makes it really have that vintage look as well. Shot with my Dedolights and comped into a sweep made in Modo.
Jiro Ono and René Redzepi Have a Cup of Tea
Amazing motivational interview here. Says he did not consider himself a master till 50 years old! before that was, "A lot of failures."
RE:Instagram
After years of not being on Instagram due to my dislike of social media I signed up not too long ago and I have been having a blast. That with the new iPhone camera just makes walking around and doing my street photography super fun again. That is the feed to the left over there. Now if only I could start to understand hashtags, lol!
New work in the wild: Pedialyte
The lovely photographer Thomas Brummett asked us to help out on a project for Pedialyte that went live today. It's called, "See the Lyte"
Car Illustrations for BPM and K&N
The fine folks at BPN asked if I could help out with some car illustrations for K&N. As someone who struggles to change his wiper blades I figured I was a perfect match! Lots of composites here and just a smidge of CGI. They let me run a little wild with some of the toning which was enjoyable.

Joining the instagram about 10 years too late! Whee! You can find me at danklife_photo on there now.
Daily 3d Post
Reddit has a Daily 3d sub I have been lurking on for awhile and the one today was "Eclipse" and I thought I could do something fairly quick on that one. So this is my first submission to it.
Photoshop says, "Welcome back to work!"
Just Photoshop's way of welcoming me back from vacation I guess?
Around Kapaa and coast
Some pics from around town and one from a broat ride. I like broats.
Kalalau ridge trail
Some snaps from the Kalalau ridge trail. Bonus footage of the bar we had drinks in post hike. ;)
Roots and Rocks
Tonal study, Roots and Rocks. Queen's Bath, Princeville, Hawaii.
Digital Painting Study
Digital painting I did in Painter 2015 using oils and conte crayons. The composition on this one is really interesting and having a non-right angle bend in the road is what gives it that tweak. Plus, there was a hell of a lot of stuff on this corner as well. I spent a good amount of time pulling the details out of the boat bumpers and traffic lights learning my way around the brushes. The palette knife was a lot of fun to scape back down to white with, though I still have a lot to learn about the settings on that.
Tint Desk Concert: Daniel Lanois
A Daniel Lanois Tiny Desk Concert playing with one of my favortie drummers Brian Blade? Yes please.
Vincent Laforet: The Age of the Standalone Still Camera is Coming to and End for all but PROS
"And that’s the point: it’s not necessarily about the search for the BEST camera, it’s the challenge to make the MOST POPULAR and WIDELY ADOPTED camera. And the Smartphones have already won that battle.
So as you like;y continue to see the camera market shrink in the next few years, (remember those things called “Point and Shoot” cameras that we used to buy just a few years ago that you don’t ever see anymore…) you’ll hopefully better understand that pros are going to increasingly become a niche market. Long gone will be the days of huge conventions with massive camera manufacturer booths."
Interesting write up, but I would say they won at least two years ago. If it was not for the Fuji x100 I would not travel with a stand alone camera at all myself. Can't think of the last time I took the DSLR out of the studio. I am saying this as a good thing. Here is a link to a few snaps I took with the Fuji just to show how good the quality is.
The thing with me though is that I now spend more time working in CGI then shooting. So make some predictions based on that metric ;)
Total Finder for Mac
Found this little plug in on the Modo forums and so far I am really loving it. It brings back the full color bar for labels in the Finder window instead of just the little dots. Some other nice features I like is that windows are forced to open in the same tabbed group and you can have it put folders at the top of a list. Overall makes the Finder much easier to work with when you have a large number of files / projects going on. Called Total Finder.
