I often get asked by people what kind of point and shoot digi cam I would recommend for them. 2 years ago it would have been a very short list. Short and expensive. But now I feel that all the chips and resolutions are good enough for all but serious amateurs who want DSLR features. The only 'must haves" would be that it has 5 or more megapixels and a manual setting.
Honestly, modern point and shoots should be chosen based on Usability above all else today. The main reason you want a camera is for snapshot types pics of friends, family and maybe some artistic stuff. Well, if the camera is too bulky to carry around, you won't carry it and you won't get any pics. If the interface is confusing you will look at it, be overwhelmed and won't shoot. And photography it is all about GETTING the picture to begin with!
So find something that you are comfortable holding. Something that fits in a purse or pocket with ease. Something that when you try to use it does not require a Rossetta stone to set it on manual. And you will have to GO to a camera store and try it out. Just like a pair of shoes. Trust me on this. Buy it online later is you have to have that Super Bargain Basement Deal that saves $10. But go try out cameras in a real store to be sure it's right for you. You want to take pictures right?
Or do you want to be just another camera owner?
